On Saturday, 23rd Amref Uganda joined the rest of the world to celebrate the international obstetric fistula day and this year’s theme is “End Gender Inequalities! End Health Inequalities! End Fistula Now. Amref Uganda organized a tweet chat and webinar on obstetric fistula; all was organized to raise awareness about the causes, complications of Obstetric Fistula, prevention and treatment
The team from Amref Uganda and other partners applauded the Ministry of Health on the efforts to end COVID-19 in Uganda.
As the country battles with the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the preventable diseases have not been given much attention as it is supposed to be. A lot of resources been allocated to COVID-19 response task force and most of the trained health care workers were redeployed to the COVID-19 team
Patrick Kagurusi, head of Programs at Amref Uganda said that the country has in the past couple of years seen decline in maternal mortality, early marriages, pregnancy-related complications but Obstetric fistula has continued to be a public health concern and an injustice to the women and girls
In this COVID-19 pandemic fight, the health sector is not only strained but also disrupted. Patrick Kagurusi while on UBC said; the Amref will continue to champion advocacy in ending obstetric fistula in Uganda by creating awareness on prevention and also by encouraging the government of Uganda to provide services to girls and women living with the condition
Obstetric fistula affects women who lack access to quality obstetric care. The disease is more prevalent among women living in communities whose cultural practices encourage early marriage, this factor increases the risk of prolonged obstructed labour leading to the condition
Eradicating Obstetric fistula in our country requires measures improving the quality of care at health facilities and sadly, COVID-19 is affecting everything right now.
